Semantic Search based on Weighted Ontologies

Elaheh Pourabbas (Italian National Research Council)

Dec 5th (Wednesday) 15:00-16:00

Room 1213, 12th Floor, NII

Semantic similarity search is one of the most promising methods for improving the performance of retrieval systems. We present an ontology-based semantic search method, called SemSim, which relies on the information content approach to evaluate the similarity among a user request and semantically annotated resources. The user request, as well as each annotated resource, is represented by a set of concepts of the reference ontology. On the bases of a comparative analysis, we show that SemSim outperforms the most representative methods proposed in the literature.

Elaheh Pourabbas is a researcher at the Istituto di Analisi dei Sistemi ed Informatica (IASI) "Antonio Ruberti"of the Italian National Research Council. She received her MS degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rome "La Sapienza" in 1992, and her PhD degree in Bioengineering from the University of Bologna in 1997. In 2005 she was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship in support of research carried out at the University of California-Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, USA. She served as referee of international journals and conferences, and took part in national and international projects. Her research interests include semantic web, data warehousing-OLAP, qualitative spatial reasoning and GIS.
